Last year, people all around the world spoke out in protest of the annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China, which sees thousands of dogs — many stolen or stray — killed for meat. And there are no signs of momentum slowing down this year either.

A petition started by Duo Duo, which calls for the end of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, has been signed by more than 2.5 million supporters from more than 140 countries. The animal rights organization has also started a crowdfunding campaign on Change.org, raising more than $85,000 in one week to help provide emergency care for dogs in Yulin.

“Many of the dogs that are killed are stolen household pets or are watchdogs of rural families. Allowing the Dog Meat Festival to continue is like endorsing dog theft, which supplies the dog meat industry,” said Duo Duo’s executive director Andrea Gung. “Additionally, the festival is also a dangerous food safety issue. Dogs sold on the market are sick, poisoned and dying animals. They suffer from horrendous conditions during the long distance, trans-provincial journeys, many days without food and water and may carry contagious disease.”

Between now and the festival on June 21, supporters will have the opportunity to be involved with online and offline activities. If you would like to join the campaign to end the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, you can:

1. Join a community of more than 6.8 million people who want to end the festival by signing Duo Duo’s petition or any of the petitions in the movement to end the Yulin Dog Meat Festival.

2. Contribute to Duo Duo’s fundraiser. Money from the fundraiser will go toward emergency medical services for rescued animals and the establishment of an adoption and education center in East Yulin.

3. Make some noise on social media. Tweet and post photos of your dogs  (or you and your dogs) wearing orange to raise awareness about Yulin leading up to the festival. Make sure you include the hastag #friendnotfood

4. Stay up-to-date. Keep an eye on Duo Duo’s Facebook page to know what people are doing in their local communities to help end the Yulin Dog Meat Festival.
