UPDATE: Snoop Dogg, the Voice of ‘Planet Earth’?

This petition is a victory!

After more than 65,000 people signed a petition to make Snoop Dogg the voice of Planet Earth, the rapper released his own nature web series on his media platform, Merry Jane, yesterday. The first episode of Planet Snoop is “Squirrel vs. Snake.”

A petition to make Snoop Dogg the voice of Planet Earth has more than 50,000 signatures, thanks to, well, Snoop Dogg.

The petition, which asks the BBC and Discovery Communication to hire Snoop Dogg to narrate a season of the documentary series, had only 1,000 signatures four days ago. It grew by nearly 5,000% after the man himself tweeted the petition and asked his fans to sign it.

Planet Earth is currently voiced by David Attenborough, which is about as far from Snoop Dogg as one could get. So how did this idea get going?

Since last February, the rapper has recorded voiceovers for clips of the documentary that are used in a semi-regular series on Jimmy Kimmel Live called “Plizzanet Earth.” All of the videos have more than one million views on YouTube. This one — “Otters vs. Crocs” — has been viewed 2.1 million times.

Kelly Ooten from Lincoln, Nebraska is a fan of “Plizzanet Earth” and started her petition two weeks ago.

“Snoop Dogg has narrated some Planet Earth in the past but yo we need him to narrate full episodes,” she wrote. “Sign the petition if you agree.”

Obviously, she is not alone in her love for the rapper’s voiceover.

Most of the petition comments mention how funny it would be to see this happen, or how much more entertaining he would be as a narrator. But a few commenters take this a little more seriously and point to the idea that Snoop could open up the program to a new audience.

If you support Snoop Dogg for the voice of Planet Earth and you want to keep up to date with what’s happening, sign the petition.
