People are Petitioning for Super Bowl Halftime Acts. Will One of these 12 Superstars Get the Gig?
The Super Bowl is a truly American holiday, beloved as much for the game itself as the parties that spring up around it, the commercials that brands break the bank on, and the halftime show.
Halftime shows have been part of the Super Bowl almost since the beginning. During the first championship match-ups, college marching bands often took the field between halves. The 1980s and 1990s saw the rise of the MTV-fuelled halftime show. And then there was the Janet Jackson – Justin Timberlake wardrobe malfunction of 2004, which paved the way for more seasoned rockers in the mid-aughts and early teens.
But in our post-wardrobe-malfunction halftime show universe – where networks play it safe – there is often heated debate and criticism over the acts who take the field.
Acts immediately following the scandal were considered too safe. Madonna’s performance drew equal amounts of love and hate. Feedback was mixed on Katy Perry. The only person to bridge the divide and unite us all was – no surprise – Beyonce.
Since people are so picky about their halftime shows these days, we say why not let the people decide who performs on Super Bowl Sunday!
And over the past few years, we’ve noticed a trend in petitions asking the NFL and the networks to do just that. Last year, for instance, nearly 130,000 people asked the NFL to let Weird Al Yankovich to perform in the Superbowl halftime show.
While Weird Al was not awarded the honor last year, we think that if you start asking CBS and the NFL now, the 50th Super Bowl just might be the one where the people get to choose the headlining entertainer.
Below are 12 of the musicians and bands that are already being put forward as in petitions as fan favorites for the coveted role of Super Bowl halftime show. They are quite an eclectic bunch!
