Racial Justice

An exciting new moment for the Change.org Racial Justice Fund

Last year, two petition starters created petitions calling for Justice for George Floyd and Justice for Breonna Taylor that became the largest petitions in Change.org’s history.

Your commitment both inspired and challenged us here at Change.org.

Since that monumental moment, Change.org has committed to more equitable practices and opportunities for its staff, users, and Black-led organizations. This includes pledging all funds from the George Floyd and Breonna Taylor petitions to racial justice work.

In June 2020 we launched the Change.org Racial Justice Fund. The Fund is our multi-million dollar commitment to support Black-led organizations driving racial justice work across the United States.

To date, we have distributed over $350,000 to Black-led groups around the United States.

Earlier this month Change.org announced next steps for the Racial Justice Fund which will work to support and resource even more Black-led organizations on the frontlines of racial justice work.

Change.org’s Racial Justice Fund will partner with NY-based community foundation, North Star Fund, to identify Black-led groups around the United States to support.

“This is an exciting and important moment at Change.org as we take the next critical steps to deepen our commitment to support racial justice work,” said Rashawn Davis, Associate Director of Change.org’s Racial Justice Fund. “Through today’s announcement we are going to deliver millions of dollars into the hands of Black-led groups, under the guidance of a leading community foundation.”

Founded in 1979, North Star Fund supports grassroots organizing led by communities of color. North Star Fund currently operates the Let Us Breathe Fund, a grantmaking program led by and for Black activists organizing against police violence and structural racism. Since its founding, North Star Fund has made over $80 million in grants.

As part of the new partnership, Change.org’s Racial Justice Fund will contribute $2 million to the Let Us Breathe Fund. North Star Fund will also work with Change.org staff to move an additional $3 million to Black-led organizations throughout the country.

“We are honored to partner with Change.org’s Racial Justice Fund team to move money to Black-led grassroots organizing in New York and throughout the US,” said Jennifer Ching, North Star Fund Executive Director. “We can only dismantle white supremacy and build a world where all communities thrive with the leadership of Black organizers, like the ones this Fund will support.”

All over the country, Black people have been leading the critical work of racial justice and we stand with them and are humbled to support those efforts.

Everyday, users like you turn to Change.org to help move the world forward. Because of you, dozens of racial justice petitions have won over the past year, showing the people power behind this transformational moment in our country and around the globe.
