Sara Wolff is a disability rights advocate, a law clerk, a motivational speaker, and a board member of the National Down Syndrome Society. She just happens to have Down syndrome.

She recognized a problem faced by people with disabilities and their families. Under previous law, they could not have more than $2,000 worth of assets – such as funds that might go toward education, transportation, or housing – before critical government support programs could be cut off.

Sara started a petition on Change.org asking Congress to pass the ABLE Act, a landmark disability rights bill to help millions of people with disabilities save for their futures, which was signed by nearly 270,000 people. She became an advocate for the bill in Washington, D.C.

The ABLE Act was passed last year with the backing of 404 Representatives and 77 U.S. Senators, including Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. In February 2015, Sara attended a ceremony at The White House hosted by Vice President Joe Biden that celebrated the bill’s passage.

“The ABLE Act impacts millions of people with disabilities and their families, helping them live more independent lives,” said Jon Perri, Associate Director of Campaigns at Change.org. “Sara Wolff’s inspirational story and hard work was instrumental to the passage of this bill. She was the ABLE Act’s champion.”
